FAN on Immigration Bill

The Franciscan Action Network (FAN) applauded the Senate proposal on comprehensive immigration reform. "We especially welcome the inclusion of a path to citizenship, with a special provision for Dreamers, and several provisions which promote family unity," the group said in a press release. "In our initial and incomplete assessment, FAN has several concerns about the legislation, including stringent and costly border enforcement measures, the very long path to citizenship, and the elimination of the family sibling category."

FAN and other Catholic advocacy groups have been at the forefront of the fight for immigration reform. There is no issue before the country that excites my heart more than this, in part because of the essential justice that is needed, and in part because, unlike stopping abortion or curbing gun violence, it appears that immigration reform might be politically ripe. In the days and weeks ahead, the opponents of immigration reform will be hurling all they have at this bi-partisan plan. It is imperfect, to be sure, because compromise requires it be imperfect. But, it is a huge, make that HUGE step in the right direction. Go to FAN's website and see how you can help.
