While I was away, a friend sent me a link to this report on one of Pope Francis' morning sermons, in which Pope Francis said that Christianity is not ethics, but a "story of salvation," and "bending over the flesh of our brothers and sisters." The friend asked if I was ghost writing for the pope. I am not. I would suggest that Pope Francis actually read and listened to Pope Benedict, as I tried to do. Again, there is great continuity between the two. The discontinuity exists between Francis and the various interpretations of Benedict offered by American conservative Catholics who have spent their career reducing religion to ethics.
