Vatican Insider reports on the Holy Father's message to a Festival on Catholic social doctrine. They quote the Holy Father as saying:
“Social doctrine is against profit going to those who produce and the social question left up to the State or assistance and volunteering initiatives. This is why solidarity is a key word. But this word is at risk of disappearing from the dictionary because it is an awkward word, it is almost – forgive me – like a swear word. The economy and the market see it almost like a swear word.”
I suspect that first sentence got garbled in translation. But the line about solidarity being a swear word is something for those who aspire to run business schools at Catholic universities to ponder: How does the modern, financialized economy encourage solidarity?
