E.J. Dionne has a very thoughtful column in today's Washington Post about the renewed appreciation for Lyndon Johnson's presidency. As he notes, part of this has to do with wanting a president with LBJ's legislative skill: He got stuff done. In the paralyzed Washington of today, his competence alone shines forth. But, LBJ deserves a better reputation for more than that. As Dionne concludes, "The earthily practical Johnson showed that these were not empty dreams and that finding realistic ways of creating a better world is what Americans are supposed to do."
