How big a step is it toward a nuclear-free world? On July 7 at the United Nations 122 countries signed an agreement outlawing nuclear weapons. The problem? None of the nuclear powers participated in the drafting of the treaty and none voted on it. But that's just one more obstacle for peace activists, many of them women religious, who have been working on the issue for decades. The Vatican likes the agreement and says it will host two conferences on nuclear disarmament in the fall.

Alleged embezzlement by Lansing, Mich., priest approaches $5 million. Fr. Jonathan Wehrle, 66, founding pastor of St. Martha Parish, was arrested and charged with embezzlement following a diocesan audit of parish finances.
