Bishops to vote for chairmen-elect of five committees, secretary-elect, international justice and peace chairman at November meeting

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will vote for their secretary-elect, the chairmen-elect of five committees and the new chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace when they gather in Baltimore for their November 14-16 Fall General Assembly.

Bishops are nominated by the USCCB Committee on Priorities and Plans. Chairmen-elect serve in that capacity for one year before beginning a three-year term as chairmen of the respective committees.

The bishops nominated are:

USCCB Secretary-elect/chairman of the Committee on Priorities and Plans
• Bishop Robert Cunningham of Syracuse, New York
• Archbishop Peter Sartain of Seattle

Committee on Communications
• Archbishop Thomas Rodi of Mobile, Alabama
• Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City

Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church
• Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas
• Bishop Martin Holley, auxiliary bishop of Washington

Committee on Doctrine
• Bishop Robert McManus of Worcester, Massachusetts
• Archbishop John Nienstedt of St. Paul and Minneapolis

Committee on National Collections
• Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn, New York
• Archbishop Dennis Schnurr of Cincinnati

Committee on Pro-Life Activities
• Cardinal Sean O’Malley, OFM Cap. of Boston
• Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit

Committee on International Justice and Peace
• Bishop Frank Dewane of Venice, Florida
• Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines, Iowa

The election of a chairman instead of a chairman-elect for International Justice and Peace reflects the fact that Archbishop Edwin O’Brien was elected chairman-elect in 2010 but will not assume the position because Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order (Knights) of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem on August 29. The bishop elected to chair International Justice and Peace will assume leadership of the committee at the close of this year’s meeting.

Coverage of the meeting is open to credentialed media. Sessions open to the media will be Monday, November 14, and Tuesday, November 15. Media conferences will follow open sessions of the meeting.
