Chicago Cardinal Francis George will begin chemotherapy treatments next week after cancer was detected in his liver and kidney. George's health had been carefully monitored since 2006, when his bladder was removed because of cancer.
No further problems were detected until his most recent CT scan. Last week after a recurrence was discovered, George said, "The assumption was, that after six years, having had my bladder totally removed, with no evidence of cancer, that it was not just in remission but that it was cured. I had felt I'd licked something and I didn't, and so that isn't a good feeling."
Starting next week, the cardinal will undergo six sessions of chemo, with each session running three weeks. George said he intends to continue his schedule as usual but mightneed to limit some activities because of weakness.
