Catholic author: 'Give up your pew for Lent'

Today's New York Times has a guest opinion piece by author and Catholic Paul Elie, who proposes that since the pope resigned, so should Catholics -- at least for one weekend. Elie is a senior fellow in the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs at Georgetown University.

Elie, the author of two excellent books, The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage (Disclosure: This book is one of my all-time favorites.) and Reinventing Bach, is not given to dramatic protests or rants about the church, a church he loves. This is what makes his essay even more compelling. Already this morning, friends are emailing me a link to his essay.
