Communion? Decide for yourself, Gumbleton says

"Don't stop going to Communion," says Thomas Gumbleton, retired auxiliary bishop of Detroit. "You're OK."

Gumbleton's remarks are a response to recent comments from Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron, who said Catholics who support gay marriage should refrain from receiving Communion.

Gumbleton, known for his progressive voice in Detroit's Catholic community, spoke out against Vigneron's statements to the local Fox 2 News.

Fox News in Detroit reported Gumbleton's response Thursday.

The archdiocese "respectfully decline further comment on this issue at this time," wrote reporter Amy Lange. "In addition to reaching out to the archdiocese, I also attempted to contact several metro Detroit priests asking if they could speak out in support of the archbishop. They were either unavailable or did not grant an interview."
