Maryknoll statement on SOA

Thanks to Maryknoll Father Joe Veneroso for acquiring the statement from the Maryknoll order about their decision to cut funding to the School of the Americas Watch, which I posted about yesterday here.

A few comments:

* Apparently the decision was made in May, though not communicated to SOA Watch until recently. So it had nothing to do with the recent Vatican statement about women's ordination.

* The statement says the decision is not meant to be punitive or to put pressure on Bourgeois. The Maryknoller order remains "unambiguous in its support of the goals if the SOA Watch."

I'm just speculating here, but those statements seem to imply this was not wholly their decision. I sense outside pressure.

* To be fair, although Father Bourgeois was automatically excommunicated because of his participation in ordination ceremonies of women, the Maryknoll order has not expelled him. Yet. I hope I haven't jinxed anything.
