New Yorkers love their governor more than ever -- but they love the idea of increasing the minimum wage even more, says Wednesday's New York Post.
While Gov. Andrew Cuomo got his highest approval rating ever (71 percent) in a Quinnipiac University poll, 79 percent of voters said they want the state to raise its minimum wage -- including by 61 percent of Republicans surveyed.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) wants to raise the current minimum wage, $7.25 an hour, to $8.50 next year, with annual indexing for inflation. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Long Island) has said he will not take up Silver's bill before the scheduled end of this year's state legislative session June 21 but has left the door open for a compromise measure.
