Stephen Colbert takes on gay marriage

If you didn’t catch David Boies and Theodore B. Olson on the Colbert Report last night, this is your opportunity. Boies was especially succinct in arguing for marriage equality, the rights of gays and lesbians to equal protection under the law within a civil marriage.

The two distinguished attorneys are making the rounds, pushing their new book, Redeeming the Dream. It's the story of how they joined forces to forge a legal argument in support of gay marriage, one that is being held up in state after state as gay civil unions take hold across the land. You might remember these men argued against each other all the way to the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore.

Our bishops, meanwhile, have staked their credibility in a fight to on assure gay rights are not extended to marriage. They are flat-out wrong to do so.

We’ve said it before and it needs to be said again: “The church's teaching on sexuality is unpersuasive because the church advances teachings that actually reduce human sexuality and sexual activity to its most banal, utilitarian and mechanistic level, detaching it from the deepest possibilities of genuine human intimacy.”

It’s worth suffering through an ad to hear Boies sum up his support for gay civil marriage.
