The Copy Desk Daily highlights recommended news and opinion articles that have crossed the copy editors' desks on their way to you: National Catholic Reporter, Global Sisters Report and EarthBeat.

NCR's Grace on the Margins columnist Jamie Manson has her own take on why the U.S. bishops would ally themselves (at the March for Life) with President Donald Trump: "There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the real endgame in the bishops' anti-abortion fight is the radical desire to control women's agency and women's fertility."

More from our opinion section: Jesuit Fr. Tom Reese at Religion News Service talks about the forthcoming Vatican report on former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

Pauline Sr. Rose Pacatte looks at the halftime show at Super Bowl LIV and asks whether the NFL ought to make the it family-friendly and do something about the human trafficking, too.

U.S. President Donald Trump (did you watch/listen to the State of the Union address last night?) has included Brazilians in the "remain in Mexico" policy on northward migration (announced Jan. 29). NCR has a report on a different aspect of Brazil, the country with the world's largest Catholic population:  "From the 1990s on, it started to shrink about 1% per year," and evangelicals are gaining.

On the other side of the world (Rome): The National Conservatism project held a daylong conference that included mixed clarion calls against "hegemonic progressivism" with occasional warnings about Pope Francis' vision for the Catholic Church. Read what the coalition of right-wing nationalist groups are concerned about.
