The Copy Desk Daily highlights recommended news and opinion articles that have crossed the copy editors' desks on their way to you: National Catholic Reporter, Global Sisters Report and EarthBeat.

Friday, NCR lauched a new feature, Coronavirus Tracker, where you can find the latest headlines about the coronavirus pandemic as it relates to the Catholic Church and other Catholic institutions.

As you can see, the edition from March 13 includes announcements from the Boston Archdiocese and individual parishes to suspend Mass and other activities, news from the Vatican about COVID-19, plans by Catholic colleges to manage the effects of the pandemic, and more. A new Coronavirus Tracker digest is posted Monday through Friday. You can find these and all our coronavirus coverage on NCR's Coronavirus feature series page. One week from tomorrow, March 24, marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Romero. Chris Herlinger traveled to El Salvador in the fall to talk to people there about the saint's legacy. NCR has two engaging stories:

  • In a country where Óscar Romero's visage is seemingly everywhere — on street corners, in shops and living rooms and in sacred spaces — one question hovers at the sidelines: Which Romero is being honored? The saint? The humble priest? The martyred Catholic? Read: Multiple legacies of St. Óscar Romero reflect his identities, 40 years after death
  • Salvadoran human rights activist Marisa de Martínez may be the sister of Roberto D'Aubuisson, but she focuses on the work that still needs to be done in El Salvador, including her association with the Ascension sisters. Herlinger met with her. Hear what she had to say.

In other regular NCR coverage, our latest editorial asks: How do women convince a male clerical culture to change?

Last week, President Donald Trump's campaign announced it would be launching a "Catholics for Trump" coalition at an event in Milwaukee. The next day, Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki issued a statement distancing himself from the event. Then, citing the threat of coronavirus, the event was scrapped by the Trump campaign. The campaign tweeted that the event would be rescheduled, however, so the issue will be back: Should the church actively discourage such partisan groups? The short answer, writes columnist Michael Sean Winters, is yes. Read more.
