Copy Desk Daily, July 23, 2019

Our team of copy editors reads and posts most of what you see on the websites for National Catholic Reporter and Global Sisters Report (the NCR project focusing on women religious). The Copy Desk Daily highlights recommended news and opinion articles that have crossed our desks on their way to you.

When NCR staff writer Brian Roewe attended the recent conference on Pope Francis' environmental encyclical, Laudato Si', at Creighton University, he got the chance to sit down with San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy for an interview: Climate should be 'a central priority' for US church, says Bishop McElroy — and that includes making it a structural priority of the U.S. bishops' conference. On the NCR website, you can also read the full text of McElroy's keynote speech at the conference, where he talked about the encyclical's 'urgent summons' to the American people.

Rounding out today's focus on climate change and the Catholic faith is our editorial: With the Earth in peril, we must act on behalf of God's creation. (As the Our Common Home series expands our climate coverage, we'd like to know what you'd like to see: Please take a moment to fill out our reader survey.)

There are two sisters from tribal communities in India who currently theology doctoral candidates, the first in the history of India. Global Sisters Report opens a window into their lives and aspirations with two pieces in their own words: a column, Obstacles overcome, a dream come true, by Sr. Rekha Kerketta, and a Q & A with Sr. Rashmi Kanta Kiro.

In her column for this month, Phyllis Zagano reflects on the history of immigration to the U.S. and how boundaries and borders serve 'us,' while all others suffer.
