The Synod of Bishops for the Amazon is finished. Next up is the U.S. bishops' fall meeting in Baltimore. Fr. Tom Reese says they would do well to look back at that meeting at the Vatican in October: What the US bishops can learn from the Amazon synod.

At the Baltimore meeting next week, the bishops will be electing a new president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and that's likely going to be the current vice president, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles. A native of Mexico and immigrant advocate who's connected to Opus Dei, Gomez could be a 'bridge' if elected bishops' conference president, some observers say.
